Leave Your AC Alone!
You get home from work and your house has become stuffy and the temperature uncomfortable. Now you have to wait for the air conditioning unit to kick in and bring the air back down to the desired temperature. Should you have turned off your air conditioning system while you were gone? The answer is no.
It’s a common misconception that turning off the unit while you’re away will be more cost-efficient. In the long run this will negate any efforts to reduce your cooling expenses.

Ways to Reduce Costs and Increase Efficiency
Don’t worry, we’ve come up with a few tips to help you find that happy medium between a comfortable home and lower home energy bills.
- Never turn your air conditioning system off completely. This will cause the inside temperature to rise and will inevitably use more energy when you decide to reduce the thermostat to the preferred temperature.
- Raise your thermostat by a few degrees when you’re out for extended periods of time. For instance, if you find that 72 degrees is a comfortable temperature, raise the temperature to 78 degrees while you are out. This will allow the unit to bring the temperature back down to the desired level more quickly than if the unit was shut off completely.
- Your AC should remain at the normal level if you are leaving for a short period of time. You should only change the temperature for a few degrees when leaving for more than a few hours. The cost of changing the temperature constantly will be much greater than if you leave your AC unit alone.
- Don’t set the temperature lower than the desired level to get it there faster. The air conditioning system works at a constant pace no matter what temperature is set. Likewise, pressing the button on an elevator multiple times won’t make it arrive at the destination any faster. It will stay at a constant pace when trying to reach your desired level. Setting the thermostat lower than the comfortable temperature will only cause the AC unit to exert unnecessary
