Knowing whether or not you need a heat pump repair isn’t particularly complicated. A heat pump is pretty vocal, and displays clear signs of disrepair through odd sounds, inaccurate heating and cooling, or even flat-out not working. Now, knowing what is wrong can be a little trickier, but is also important to understand. It’s always a terrible feeling when you call in a professional and fork out all of that cash, only to find out the settings weren’t in the right position!
So how do you know when you need heat pump repair, or when there’s an easy answer you can handle on your own? Well, it’s pretty easy if you know what to look for. We’ve created a straightforward troubleshooting guide that can be gone over in less than fifteen minutes!

Troubleshooting Guide: Somewhat Surefire Diagnosis in Fifteen Minutes
We say “somewhat” surefire because sometimes problems arise that can stump the most HVAC-savvy of homeowners. But generally speaking, this guide can be trusted to give you a good idea of what’s up with your pump.
Before you start
Ensure that all of the usual maintenance for your heat pump has been done. Try cleaning around and inside the pump, taking care to remove dust and grime. Replace or clean your filter, and be sure there is no clog present anywhere visible. If you’ve done all of this and still got nothing for it, read on.
The basics
Sometimes it can be as simple as an incorrect setting. You may feel silly about it, but everyone forgets the simple stuff now and again! Check:
- The thermostat. Is it turned on? Is it set to heat? If no, there’s you with a solution! If yes, keep going.
Will your heat pump start up?
If your pump simply isn’t responding, it could be a few things. Try:
- Alternating temperature settings. Drop the temperature setting by a few degrees, then in a few minutes kick it up about ten. If it started, you’re good to go!
- Inspecting your fan. If your fan is unresponsive, check the breaker at your electric panel. Is it flipped? If it is, your heat pump overloaded, and this could be an issue with the breaker. Try flipping it back on. If it stays on, you’re likely fine and it was probably an electrical issue with the grid. If it flipped again, either the breaker is bad, the wiring is bar, or your heat pump needs professional service.
If the fan is running, but the pump is providing no heat
- Bump thermostat settings. Try increasing the temperature by a few degrees. If that gets it, your thermostat is likely to blame. It’ll operate okay, but in the meantime you’ll want to have it replaced.
Take note that this problem can also lie with the outdoor unit of your pump, and if so we don’t recommend attempting to troubleshoot on your own. There are a lot of components in there, and a single misstep can spell a heat pump replacement you didn’t want to deal with!
